Throughout many years of gaming the one genre or style of game that has passed me by is the brutal style of gameplay that Demon souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne introduced over the last couple of years.
For those of you who are either not into gaming or who are also not familiar with these types of games, the genre that they popularized is pretty much a tough as nails action / RPG hybrid with a heavy focus on health and stamina management and a combat system that rewards patience and skill. It also doesn’t hold your hand at all and right from the get go you’ll find yourself coming up against enemies that beat you to a pulp with minimal effort. With the release of Sony’s PS4 system in Japan on 22 February I decided to pick up a console for myself. Since moving to Japan I’ve moved to Sony’s platform for almost all of my gaming (The Xbox 360 is all but nonexistent here and the Xbox One hasn’t even officially been given a release date yet.) and as I’ve never really bought a console at launch I thought I might as well give it a shot and see what all the fuss is about.
So after managing to place a pre-order with Amazon and a few months wait the day arrived when I could finally unwrap my shiny new console and see if the gamer in me would come away impressed. Another weekend is down and this is my last week of teaching before I head back home for some much-needed R & R with family and friends in South Africa.

As I was walking to the local convenience store this morning it struck me that this weekend will be my last ‘official’ weekend of gaming on my old PS3. After this weekend I’ll be heading to South Africa for a short holiday before coming back to Japan and the weekend that I get back will be when the PS4 releases here in the land of the rising sun.
